The shrine representing peace, Shimogamo Shrine
Beautiful Gate
Shimogamo Shrine is surrounded by nature, and it has a holy atmosphere. If you're lucky, you may see a wedding ceremony held by the shrine. The white Japanese wedding dress looks beautiful with the red color of the gate.
Bridge and the red plum
It is said that Kourin Ogata, the author of a painting which is registered as a national treasure, wrote the picture around this area. Therefore, the plum tree here is known as "Kourin no Ume" (Kourin's plum tree) You can enjoy the beautiful color of the plum flowers from the end of February to the beginning of March.
The beginning of Mitarashi Dango
This place is called "Mitarashi no Yashiro", meaning "a place to wash hands." Inspired by the water coming out from Mitarashi Pond, Mitarashi Dango (rice dumpling with sweet soy sauce) was born. In Summer, many people visit the shrine to attend Mitarashi Festival, a religious ritual wherein people walk in the Mitarashi Pond.
Colorful Fortune Paper
The design of the fortune paper for women is inspired by the twelve-layered ceremonial kimono which was worn in the past. Many colorful fortune papers were fluttering in the wind. With the slight smell of incense, visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of Kyoto.
The only lucky charm for yourself
The cute lucky charms are very popular in Shimogamo Shrine. All lucky charms are made from different fabrics, so there are no identical lucky charms in the world. Visitors can enjoy choosing the very one lucky charm for themselves.
